Wildflower Fields Completed!

Two years ago, Bonnie Hunter over at Quiltville had a mystery quilt that I participated in.  The pattern is called Orca Bay and Bonnie's colors were blue, red, black and neutrals.

I chose to use fabrics completely from my stash and opted for greens, purples, yellows/pinks and neutrals.

Wildflower_Fields-F

There were an amazing number of pieces to this quilt, as is typical with Bonnie Hunter quilts.  I don't think I would recommend one of her patterns to a beginner or to someone who solely does hand-piecing.

Wildflower_Fields-E

It was actually hard at times to make sure that I had all the right pieces because there were so many.  I think it was something like 300-400 little purple triangles.

Wildflower_Fields-D

The center blocks finally started coming together as Ohio Star blocks.  Both light and dark versions of them.

Wildflower_Fields-C

And finally some blocks up on the design wall to see the overall pattern.

And finally....

Completely bound and ready for use!

The photo above has the overhead light on while the photo below is just the natural light coming through the windows.  The day was overcast so I decided to do both pictures.

It was a fun quilt to make and despite it being a bit "crazy colored" in the beginning, the quilt turned out really well at the end.  My husband even likes it and initially he called it the "ugly quilt".

Stash Busting 2013 - Week 35

Last week was a good quilting week.  I mostly stayed inside, despite the nice weather, due to the poison ivy rash I had.  Sunblock made the skin feel like it was burning, so I had to stay in or risk getting sunburn on top of the poison ivy rash. Yuck!

But because I stayed in, I was able to finish quilting Wildflower Fields (the pattern is Orca Bay by Bonnie Hunter).  I even made the binding and have it all machine-sewn on.  I sew the back of the binding by hand, so it will stay in the partially attached category until the weather gets cooler and I want a quilt to cover up with.  :-)  There's no way I'm sitting with a heavy quilt on me when its 85-degrees out!

IMG_2385

The next two photos show the quilting detail a little bit more.  I used wool batting on this one, so its a bit puffier than standard cotton batting.

IMG_2387

IMG_2386

We also finally hung the Lone Star quilt in the foyer.  I did not block this quilt at all, just machine washed and dried it and it hangs perfectly straight!  Yay!  It really fills the space on the wall really well and we love how it looks up there.  You can easily see all the texture that the quilting created on it... even when you're 15 feet away from it.

IMG_2399

It is a bit difficult to get a picture of it on the wall as I'm either off to the side and at the some level (i.e. standing upstairs) or I'm under it taking a picture from below.  Either way... it looks really great hanging on the wall.  Since it wasn't terribly difficult to hang (had to use two ladders and one of the ladders was on the stairs), I may enter this one in a quilt show during the up-coming year.  We'll see if I find anything that I want to enter it into....

So in terms of stash busting, I was able to count a lot of fabric this week because of the backing on Wildflower Fields.  I also counted the binding since there's only the hand-sewing left to do.

So here are my stash numbers:

Added This Week:       0.00 yards
Added Year to Date:    5.86 yards
Used This Week:          6.48 yards
Used Year to Date:       14.85 yards
Net Year to Date:         8.99 yards

I'm in the black by almost 9 yards of fabric.  I love using backings!  :-)

Check out how others are doing with their stash over on Judy's blog.

Wildflower Fields

The one good thing about the poison ivy rash that I picked up was that it gave me more time to sew.  Once I got past the first week of intense itching and sitting with an ice pack on my arm constantly, things weren't too bad.  The only issue was that when I tried to put sunblock on, it felt like my arm was on fire.  So sunblock was out...  Since I burn easily anyway, there was no way I was going to get sunburn on top of the poison ivy!

Since I was "stuck" inside, I decided to buckle down and finish the quilting on Wildflower Fields and just get it done.  This quilt is a pattern called Orca Bay from Bonnie Hunter.  I made this while Bonnie had this is a mystery quilt, but now you can purchase that pattern through one of her books.

Here's the quilt about 3/4 done through quilting:

IMG_2381

And a close-up of some of the stitching.  I used Superior Threads bottom line in the bobbin and king tut in the top.  The King Tut was a variegated purple-ish colored thread.

IMG_2382

Somehow the purple/pink colors of the thread mixed well with all the colors on the quilt.

IMG_2383

IMG_2384

I also decided to use wool batting on this quilt.  Its my first time using wool and I think I may use it more often for some of the quilts when I want the quilting to stand out a bit more.

IMG_2385

You can see the texture from the quilting and wool batting in the next few photos.

IMG_2386

IMG_2387

It took a longer than I expected to quilt this quilt, but its done now....which means I'll be able to count the backing as stash used this coming weekend.  :-)

IMG_2388

I still have to trim the quilt and add the binding to it (a solid green), but I really like how this quilt turned out.  I'm in the process of getting caught up with my quilting and turning out some finishes.  This will only be my 2nd finish this year as the Lone Star quilt took up most of my quilting time earlier this year.

It feels good to get some more finishes done.  :-)

Make-A-List Monday

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  The weather was finally pretty nice here in upstate NY.  We had some sun and the temperatures were above freezing during the day.  It was still cold enough at night that we received a dusting of snow each night, but it was gone within a few hours during the day.

I did get some items done this week, but not as much as I would have liked.  I had some medical tests that I had to have run over the past few days, which ended up making it such that I didn't want to do anything.

Here was the list from last week:
1. Finish quilting the border for Lone Star. I didn't get to finish the quilting, but I have about half of the border done.

IMG_2104

2. Post pictures of ceiling progress (we should get all the crown up this week). Done.  Posted about it here.
3. Press and photograph Bento Box pieces. Done.  I'll post some pictures here.

IMG_2100

4. Setup Wildflower Fields for quilting. No progress.

I really hope to make some progress on the Lone Star quilting this week.  I'm at a stage where I can sit down and do 15-20 minutes of quilting easily and then be able to stop.  I find that when I am at stages where I can do just a little bit at a time, I am able to make more progress.  During the week its sometimes hard to find an hour or two to do something more complicated.

I have a guild meeting tonight, so that means no quilting will happen tonight.  I also have to make sure I start getting to the gym this week, so that will also take up some time.  We only have one full weekend left to finish the ceiling, so we're down to the wire and need a big push to finish that up.  So this week, my list is going to be shorter than normal.  Only two things on it this week...

1. Finish quilting borders on Lone Star.
2. Post pictures for ceiling progress.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Make-A-List Monday

Whew!  What a week last week was.  I was definitely glad when the weekend rolled around.  The weekend was a bit of a late start for me though since I didn't leave work on Friday until 6pm.  Nothing like being one the last people in the office on a Friday evening.  Yuck!  At least it was quiet and I got some good work done.

Today is another quiet day in the office.  Presidents' Day is a floating holiday for us, which means that a lot of people take the day off and our hourly staff have it as a holiday.  The office is definitely quiet here today.  With this week being mid-winter break for the schools in the area, the entire week should be a little bit lighter.

Last week was a productive week, even though I spent a lot of time at work.

1. Mark the border quilting for the large outer border on Lone Star.  Done! I started and finished marking on Saturday morning.
2. Post pictures of needlepoint and coffered ceiling progress.  Done!  I posted about it here and here.
3. Post pictures of Bento Box progress.Done!  I posted about it here.
4. Post review of tea maker. :-) Done! Posted here.

I don't have any pictures to share today, but I'm going to be leaving the office a bit early today to make up for last week and I hope to get some quilting done when I get home. I did sew a bit on the Bento Box quilt over the weekend, but no pictures to show for it.  On Sunday, my in-laws came up to help us out with the coffered ceiling, so we made some good progress there, too.

So here's the list for this coming week:
1. Finish sewing the Bento Box quilt pieces.
2. Quilt the marked border for the Lone Star quilt.
3. Post pictures of the ceiling progress.
4. Decide upon design to quilt Wildflower Fields.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Stashbusting 2013 - Week 6

A bit of sewing did take place this week.  I did a bit of work on the Bento Box quilt and I also finished all the straight-line quilting on the Lone Star quilt.  The small amount of work on the Bento Box quilt makes up the ~1/2 yard of fabric used this week; however, I did also have to buy some backing material for a quilt, so that's getting counted towards the stash...in the wrong direction.

Here are the colors for the next blocks in the Bento Box quilt:

IMG_2055

And progress on the Lone Star quilting:

IMG_2054

I plan on doing a few more posts over the next few days showing the snow we received (about 10 inches) and the progress on a few other "projects".

Here are my numbers

Added This Week:       5.86 yards
Added Year to Date:    5.86 yards
Used This Week:          0.56 yards
Used Year to Date:       1.11 yards
Net Year to Date:         -4.75 yards

Make-A-List Monday

How did it get to be Monday again?  Somehow its already the middle of January and I'm not quite sure how that happened!

I did make a bit of progress this past week on things I had wanted to complete. Here was last week's list:

1. Post a picture of my progress on my needlepoint.  The "page" shown below is actually completed now.  I'm on to page 9...of 42.

IMG_2011

2. Finish quilting the straight lines in all four triangles. Done.  All four triangles have the straight-line quilting done.

IMG_1998

3. Start quilting the straight lines in the corner squares (4 total).  Done!  I finished quilting one of the four corner squares.

 IMG_2012

4. Pair up white strips and batiks for a Bento Box quilt. Done.  All strips paired up and I made one block.  I also cut fabric for the next 3 blocks.

IMG_2006

IMG_2013

So I made a lot of progress this past week.  I don't know if I'll be able to keep it up this coming week.  We also made progress on a house project we've been working on.  We want to put a coffered ceiling into one of our rooms, but we've been struggling with how to put something square into a non-square room.  Below is a picture of what we kind of want to do.

By the end of Sunday, we had figured out how to make it square and snapped some reference lines onto the ceiling.  The next step is going to be to buy some wood that we need to use to put the "boxes" on the ceiling and measure the thickness of the wood so we place everything correctly.

My plans for the coming week are:
1. Mark and quilt at least one additional corner square on Lone Star.
2. Post an updated picture of the needlepoint.
3. Sew next three blocks for the Bento Box quilt.
4. Order backing material for Wildflower Fields.

Stashbusting 2012 - Weeks 35 & 36

I missed posting last week, so its a double-post this week.  The biggest accomplishment is that I finished up Wildflower Fields!  This fabric was already counted, but I want to share the photos again.  The pictures don't really do the top justice.  Its so much prettier in person.  I'm going to have to try get really good pictures of it once I have it quilted.

Wildflower_Fields-8

Closer picture of one of the corners.

Wildflower_Fields-9

The other big news is that I officially have another commission quilt to make.  A woman my mother knows has a daughter who is expecting in January and she asked around for where she could get something special.  My mother happened to mention that I made quilts and this woman jumped on it.  We've already picked out the design and now its time to go fabric shopping!  Since this fabric will be used right up when I purchase it and its not for my own use, I won't be counting it in the stash reports.

I'm really excited about making this quilt and I hope the client loves it when I give it to her later this fall.

So I used a little bit of stash this week playing around with some blocks for the outer border of a scrappy quilt I'm working on.  I will have to wait to make more of the blocks though as I need more fabrics to throw into the mix.

Here are the numbers:
Added This Week:       0.0 yards
Added Year to Date:    18.54 yards
Used This Week:          0.12 yards
Used Year to Date:       21.12 yards
Net Year to Date:         -2.58 yards

Make-A-List Monday... on Tuesday

Whenever there's a three-day weekend with the holiday on Monday, I get all screwed up in terms of what day of the week it is.  This time is no exception. :-)  Actually, I think it may even be worse because I took Friday off from work to make it a four-day weekend.

I was able to get some sewing done, but not a huge amount as both Saturday and Sunday were spent a my parents' and my inlaw's for two separate labor day gatherings.

Here was the plan for last week.

1. Post on Wednesday with project progress.  Work was crazy busy, so I didn't do this last week.
2. Finish adding the final borders to Wildflower Fields.  Finished!
3. Post about Quilt #6.  Finished!
4. Post a picture of the current needlepoint project. Oops - forgot to even take a picture.  I did finish the "page" I was working on and am onto the last page for the first row.  There's 42 pages total!  The first row when I'm done with it will have 30,000 stitches.  That's a scary number!.
5. Post for Stashbusting Sunday.  Wasn't home on Sunday, so I didn't get a chance to post.

So here's Wildflower Fields all completed (except final quilting and binding).

Wildflower_Fields-8

Closer picture of one of the corners.

Wildflower_Fields-9

I think it came out way better than I thought it would.  The pictures really don't do it justice as the colors are very vibrant in person and they just don't show up as well in the picture.  I can't wait to get this on the frame and quilted!

So this week, I'm not even going to attempt to be adventurous as its probably going to be another busy week.  In no particular order...

1. Post for Stashbusting on Sunday.
2. Quilt more of the Beginning Sampler and post photos of quilted blocks.
3. Design quilting motif for Lone Star wall hanging.
4. Trim "leftover" bits from other quilts into usable pieces.
5. Photograph needlepoint and post picture.

Wildflower Fields

Late last year, I started a mystery quilt pattern from Bonnie Hunter called Orca Bay.  I'm finally getting around to finish it.  This has been a labor of love and sometimes of annoyance.  It took a very long time to make all the string blocks and triangles.  There's too many individual pieces to count in this quilt.

Here's how it was at the start of this week with the center pieced and the inside border on.

Wildflower_Fields-7

I was finally able to get some time after work on Thursday and put the last borders on to finish this up.  While I still have to quilt it, I'm really happy that the "hard part" is done now.  It came out a lot better than I had thought it would.  I liked all the fabrics I originally picked (all from stash with a few supplements when I ran out), but didn't dream that it would look this good.  The pictures don't do it justice.  My husband thought it was ugly for the longest time, but now that its together, he thinks its pretty cool.

Wildflower_Fields-8

Closer picture of one of the corners.

Wildflower_Fields-9

I have a simple pantograph pattern of daisies that I think I'm going to use for the quilting.  Since its so busy, I just want something that will provide texture to the quilt.  Now...on to the next project. :-)

Make-A-List Monday

What a beautiful Monday today is here in Upstate NY.  It was nice and cool this morning with a lot of sun breaking through the early morning fog.  It definitely feels like fall is on its way with these cooler mornings.  It still gets very warm, even hot, during the afternoon, but the evenings and mornings are cool now.

Due to the dry weather this summer, the trees are already starting to change color a bit.

It will be interesting to see how this fall goes with how dry the summer was.  We had our lawn put in this past spring and due to the heat and lack of water, most of it died in the front yard.  So this past weekend we spent prepping the ground (filling in holes and spreading fresh dirt) and then spreading grass seed and straw.  Hopefully we'll have better luck getting the grass to grow this fall.

Anyway, last week was fairly busy, so I didn't get a chance to post as much on the blog as I had wanted to at the beginning of the week.  I had a work "thing" on Wednesday and didn't get home until after 8pm.  Here's what I thought I was going to accomplish:

1. Post on the blog on Wednesday. Didn't get a chance to do this.
2. Finish sewing Wildflower Fields' center quilt top. Almost done.  I have just one pieced border left.
3. Post about Quilt #6. :-(
4. Post a picture and progress on the current needlepoint project.  :-(
5. Post for Stashbusting Sunday. DONE!

I'll be taking Friday off from work to make this week a 4-day week, then a 4-day weekend, and then a 4-day week next week. :-)  I think that's how life should always be...work 4 days, then off for 4 days, then work for 4 days.  I think I could handle that. ;-)

Here's the plan for this coming week:

1. Post on Wednesday with project progress.
2. Finish adding the final borders to Wildflower Fields.
3. Post about Quilt #6.
4. Post a picture of the current needlepoint project.
5. Post for Stashbusting Sunday.

Stashbusting 2012 - Week 34

I was able to get a little bit of sewing in this week and used up some additional stash.  I was able to get the entire center portion of Wildflower Fields sewn together.  This is based on Bonnie Hunter's pattern Orca Bay.  At the far right of the picture, you can see the scrappy blocks I use as leaders and enders.  I have a total of 76 of these 16-patch blocks now  I need a total of 99 for the quilt top I'm making.

Wildflower_Fields-5

This next picture shows one of the borders for the quilt.

Wildflower_Fields-6

So the 1/2 yard I used this week is a combination of another scrappy 16-patch block and 2" fabric strips for an inner border on Wildflower Fields between the quilt top and the pieced border.

Here are the numbers:
Added This Week:       0.0 yards
Added Year to Date:    18.54 yards
Used This Week:          0.5 yards
Used Year to Date:       21 yards
Net Year to Date:         -2.45 yards

Make-A-List Monday

Why is it that I make some fairly decent and I must say...EASY... plans and sometimes I just can't stick to them at all??!

Last week was somewhat productive, but work tends to get in the way of my "play" time.  At least this week the hubby is back to driving himself so I'm not losing 1 hour per day driving to his work versus mine.  His knee is definitely doing better and he's pretty much back to the way he was before surgery.  The knee is still tender and he can't bend it completely (i.e. he can't sit on his feet and have his knee bent a LOT), but he can pretty much do everything he needs to do.  He has some exercises to do now to gain that motion back.

So last week, I did get most of my plans done....

1. Post on Wednesday (I may be changing it to work-in-progress Wednesday). DONE!

2. Finish sewing rows together into quilt top for Wildflower Fields. This is almost done, although I haven't taken a decent picture yet.  I have one sewn section to press and then one final seam and the middle portion of this top is done.  Then its on to adding borders.

Wildflower_Fields-3

3. Post about Quilt #5 on the blog...this week I'm actually going to do it! Yay!  Got this one done too!

This coming week I'm hoping to get a bit more done, but I may be doing more needlepoint than quilting.  See last week we had our new TV delivered!  We haven't bought a new TV in 10 years and the TVs have come a long way since then.  We had a "little" 27-inch TV that you could barely read the writing on the sports scores.  We have now upgraded to a 65-inch HD plasma.  :-)

I have to say... its absolutely gorgeous! The one rule I gave my husband when he was picking out the TV was that it couldn't be wider than I was tall...and I'm only 5'2".  So he had 62 inches to play with.  I told him he was stretching it with the 65" TV, but he reasoned me out...the 65" is the diagonal, so on the horizontal its only 60.5".  What a goof!

So needless to say, we've been finding new HD channels to watch and renting some HD movies from our cable provider.  We will need to get a new receiver in order to truly play DVDs properly with something like a Blue-Ray player.  Our current receiver is a DVD/receiver combo and it doesn't have ANY audio/video inputs.  Argh.  So you have to play stuff through its DVD player and it doesn't even have an HDMI out cable...just component cable which doesn't give as good a picture.  So we'll upgrade the receiver in a few weeks and get a Blue-Ray player.  We're eventually going to upgrade speakers, too, but that probably won't be until next year.

Anyway - so my list of things to do this week...

1. Post on the blog on Wednesday.
2. Finish sewing Wildflower Fields' center quilt top.
3. Post about Quilt #6.
4. Post a picture and progress on the current needlepoint project.
5. Post for Stashbusting Sunday.

Hope everyone out there in "blog-land" is having a good week so far!

Stashbusting 2012 - Week 31 - 33

The past few weeks have been a little hectic as my husband had knee surgery and work has been busy again.  I have gotten some sewing done on Wildflower Fields and I have a few more blocks made for my scrappy 2.5" square quilt.  I need 99 16-patch blocks for the center and I have 75 made so far.  I'm almost there!

Here are the numbers:
Added This Week:       0.0 yards
Added Year to Date:    18.54 yards
Used This Week:          0.35 yards
Used Year to Date:       20.49 yards

Make-A-List Monday (err... Tuesday)

This is SO what I feel like today....

The husband is still recovering from knee surgery.  He decided to push it just a bit too much last week and ended up causing the knee/leg to swell again.  Its been doing a lot better though and he can now spend about half the day not having to use crutches at all.

However, Sunday night he decided he was going to try to sleep upstairs, which I was actually happy about...I missed sleeping next to him!  The down-side....he had awful stomach pains and was up all night, which meant I was up all night.  I'm not sure how he made it through Monday at work, but I definitely wasn't going to make it.  I had about an hour's worth of sleep and there was no way I was going to function, so I stayed home.  I'm still feeling pretty tired today even after sleeping 4.5 hours yesterday morning after dropping him off at work.

Needless to say, I haven't been doing a lot on the quilting front due to picking up the extra chores that hubby usually does.  I've even used this a few times now...

not for lifting rocks...but for taking the garbage out! ;-)

So here was the "grand plan" for last week.
1.  Post for Wanna Know Wednesday. DONE!

2. Start quilting individual blocks on the Quilt Sampler. Started.  I have maybe 4 blocks quilted, but then decided to take a break and get some piecing done.

3. Post about Quilt #5 on the blog. Ack! Didn't do this and I was really meaning to!

Hopefully this week will be a little better than last week.  Is it wrong that I just want it to be the weekend... NOW!?  ;-)

Plans for this week:
1. Post on Wednesday (I may be changing it to work-in-progress Wednesday).

2. Finish sewing rows together into quilt top for Wildflower Fields.
Wildflower_Fields-3

3. Post about Quilt #5 on the blog...this week I'm actually going to do it!

Hope everyone out there in "blog-land" is having a good week so far!

Make-A-List Monday

Last week was another fairly productive week.  I was able to get some sewing done on both Thursday and Friday nights, which made for a good week. :-)

Here's the list from last Monday:

1. Post photos of Shine on Bayou Cane's label and binding.  I machine stitched the binding and label on yesterday, but the actual hand-stitching is going to wait until it gets a bit cooler.  DONE!  See post here.

2. Sew rows together for Wildflower Fields. DONE!  See post here.
Wildflower_Fields-3

3. Post for Wanna Know Wednesday. DONE!  See post here.

4. Trim up extra pieces of fabric from backing of Shine on Bayou Cane to use in scrap quilts. Not done.

5. Post about Quilt #4 on the blog. DONE! See post here.

I also started quilting on a quilt top that I did for a class last summer.  I have all the stitch-in-the-ditch quilting done and am now going to start the custom quilting.  I'm going to try out some new things with this quilt and hopefully use it as a sampler.

So here's the plan for this coming week.  Its a shortened plan as my hubby has to have knee surgery on Thursday morning.  He doesn't handle illness well and this will most likely be worse.  I will definitely be tied up on Thursday with that and we'll have to play it by ear on how he does on Friday and over the weekend.  Hopefully it won't be as bad as he thinks it will be.

1.  Plan stitching for Quilt Sampler and start stitching blocks.

2. Post for Wanna Know Wednesday.

3. Post about Quilt #5 on the blog.

Stashbusting 2012 - Week 29 & 30

Since there wasn't any post last week for stash busting as Judy implemented her new blog, I have two weeks posted here.  I did get a fair amount accomplished, but not a lot of stash used.  I made a label and added binding to Shine on Bayou Cane, but I counted the binding fabric when I cut it....back in 2010!

I have a bunch of pictures here, so please be patient with the page loading. :-)

This is the panto that I used to quilt Shine on Bayou Cane.  I had a leaf pattern that I like from a picture online, so I was able to trace it and make it into a pantograph.  I also had to re-size it because the original picture was about 8" tall, but my throat space at the bottom of an 80" long quilt is just shy of 5".

Shine_on_Bayou_Cane-3

The thread I used on it was Superior Threads' Bottom Line in the bobbin and their "Lava" thread in Fern Grotto.  I also used Quilter's Dream Cotton batting in Select thickness.

Shine_on_Bayou_Cane-4

Here's a close-up of the quilting...

Shine_on_Bayou_Cane-5

And the backing....

This is the best picture I have of the quilt as I was taking it off the frame.  Once I have the binding hand-sewn to the back, I'll post another picture of the fully completed quilt.  The binding won't be hand-sewn until this fall once it gets a little cooler.

Here's the label I made for the quilt.  I didn't judge the thickness of my seam for the binding though, so a small amount of the text will be covered by the binding when its sewn down.  I'll correct that for the next one I do. :-)

This is what else I've been working on.  On the far left are two blocks for my random scrappy quilt.  It will be made of 16-patch blocks that use 2" (finished) squares from every quilt I've made.  The other blocks/rows are from Wildflower Fields (Bonnie Hunter's Orca Bay pattern).  I have just under half of the rows put together.

I probably won't have a lot of stash usage in the next few weeks as I've started quilting a quilt I started last year in a class.  I counted the backing and binding for that last year, too, so while I will get a finish done in the next few weeks, it won't change my numbers.  However, at least I'm in the positive again, which is definitely good.

Here are the numbers:
Added This Week:       0.0 yards
Added Year to Date:    18.54 yards
Used This Week:          0.42 yards
Used Year to Date:       20.14 yards
Net Year to Date:         -1.60 yards

Go on over to Judy's post to see how everyone has done this week.

Happy Crafting!
